Mindfulness is growing in popularity as a practice in daily life, mainly through the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School who has pioneered work in the health benefits of meditation.
Mindfulness can be defined as,
the intentional, accepting and non-judgemental focus of one’s attention on the emotions, thoughts and sensations occurring in the present moment. – Zgierska, 2009
Mindfulness focuses the human brain on a moment-by-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment, as opposed to its normal thoughts of the past or the future. This awareness is characterized mainly by “acceptance” – attention to thoughts and feelings without judging whether they are right or wrong.
