Emma Watson’s Mindful Speech Teaches us to Face our Fears

On 20th September 2014, UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, delivered her moving remarks during the HeForShe Special Event at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Besides being a famous actress, Emma Watson is also a certified yoga instructor and we can see her mindfulness in everything she does. I have always thought her to speak well and have admired her for this, but this speech also shows that she is willing to stand up for what she believes in, despite her obvious nerves, and do it with dignity and respect for herself and others. We can all learn from her courage.

Nerves and fear come naturally in every day life, whether it is fear of taking your Crow pose to the next level, fear of speaking out about something you believe in, or a fear of losing someone close to you. Fear is something we all live with and it tells us one very important thing about what we are about to do—we care. If you did not care deeply about whatever your fear is preventing you from doing, then you would not be afraid of it…it would not matter. See your fears, recognize them and even though we’re not all famous like Emma, plough through them, stand up to them and don’t let it hold you back.
